Wally Nell
Wally Nell (FPSSA,FPPSDC), originally from South Africa, has lived in Egypt for 6 years and is now back in the United States, currently in the Akron/Cleveland, Ohio area. He is a professional freelance photographer who has contributed to ZUMA Press, and other publications and news agencies while working both in the Middle East covering news and documentary work, and covering sport and other event photography in the USA. He bought his first camera in 1984 and by 1986 he was doing sport and photojournalism for The Star, a major newspaper in South Africa. He accredits some of his initial growth to the fact that he belonged to a camera club in Johannesburg, and the friendly rivalry he had with fellow photographers. As an amateur photographer he received a Fellowship from the Photographic Society of Southern Africa (FPSSA).
In 1990 he moved to the United States and eventually settled in San Diego, CA. During his time in the US, his clients required sport photography, portraiture, journalism and wedding photography. He has received numerous awards and has had a number of exhibitions in various locations both as part of exhibitions and alone. As a professional photographer he joined the Professional Photographers of San Diego and soon gained a Fellowship from them as well (FPPSDC). He has been reported on by a San Diego newspaper for his wedding photography, and a national sport magazine did an article on him on his volleyball photography.
Among others, his work has appeared in Sports Illustrated, National Geographic Traveler, Outside Magazine, New York Times, London Times, North County Times, Honolulu Star Advertiser, The Star, Volleyball Magazine, DIG Magazine, Southern California Home and Outdoor magazine, San Diego Sport Magazine; and commercial clients include NIKE, SPEEDO, VISA, Mountain Dew, Club Sportswear, Freestyle Watches, the United Nations and many more. His images have graced the covers of many magazines.
He has also been an invited photographic presenter/lecturer in a number of international institutions in the USA, Mexico, South Africa, Australia and Egypt, and has developed course material for photography schools.
While covering the Egyptian Revolution in early 2011, he was shot while covering protests, but has fully recovered.

My interest in photography started in high school, where as a senior I was one of three school yearbook photographers.
In 1977-1978 I was co-owner of a portrait/wedding studio called “The Country Studio,” located in Mt. Gilead, OH.
I graduated in 1978 from The Ohio State University with a BA in journalism. Following graduation I worked as a journalist/photojournalist for the Jefferson (OH) Gazette, the Cody (WY) Enterprise, the Mount Vernon (OH) Daily News and for the Oberlin (OH) Gazette. During employment at those papers I won awards for my photography at both the state and national level.
I purchased my first camera, a Nikon Nikkormat, in 1976 and have been a Nikon user ever since. In addition to 35mm, I have also shot extensively with medium format cameras, and have dabbled with large format cameras.
Photographically, I consider myself a “generalist,” though I do spend a fair amount of time wandering the streets, special events or any gathering of people looking for “street portraits.”
For the past 15 years I have been an active member of Cleveland Photographic Society, where I presently serve as a board member and photojournalism chair.
I have had photos published in “B&W Mag” and “Lensworks” publications.
